The DOT recently announced that New Yorkers using the Sixth Ave bike lane between W14th Street and West 33rd Street will soon be better protected from dangerous bicycle accidents as the city is planning to replace the actual strip of white paint with a secure and protected bike lane. The DOT didn’t specify what type of configuration will be implemented. Options may include a physically separated bike lane, a parking protected bike lane or two-way separated lanes. Protected bike lanes have proven to be very effective in reducing the number of  traffic injuries.  In a document entitled Measuring the Street, the Dot indicated that since Ninth Ave was redesigned with a protected bike lane and pedestrian safety islands, it recorded a 58% decline in injuries to all street users. A 34 year old woman died in a NYC accident involving a truck and a bicycle. The woman was riding her bike west on  56th Road near 46th Street in Maspeth, Queens yesterday morning around 8:45 when she was hit by a truck. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and died shortly after.  The driver who’s license was suspended was taken into custody. Charges are pending. Read more in the NY Daily News

A  19 year old was  seriously injured in a bicycle accident Monday early morning in Queens. The young man was riding on the eastbound bicycle lane along 34th street in Corona when he was struck by a truck turning right onto 105th street. The accident happened at night around 1:15 am. The truck driver stayed at the scene of the accident and wasn’t charged. The teenager was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for a severe leg injury. Read more in the NY Post

A 21 year old woman died and  her 22 year old friend was  seriously injured in a bicycle accident in New York City.  The two women were riding their bicycles on Hylan Blvd. in Great Kills yesterday afternoon around 4:30 pm when they were struck by a boat trailer that had slipped off  the truck that was towing it. The two women were transported to the hospital.  One of them died, the other one is expected to survive.  The driver stayed at the scene of the accident. Allegedly the trailer hinge had been modified. The driver hasn’t been charged.  Read more in the New York Daily News

A 27 year old woman was killed in  a bicycle accident  on the City Island bridge in the Bronx, NYC. The police are looking for the driver of a 2015 White Hyundai who struck 27 year old Gabriella Aguilar and sped away, leaving her to die on the road. See video below

There were 19,061 motor vehicle accidents in New York City in July 2015 compared to 19,428 the previous month. During the same month in 2014 and 2013 there were respectively 17,361 and 17,548 crashes.  For the last 3 months the number of  accidents was unusually high and stayed above 19,000. So far since the beginning of the year there were 123,697 traffic accidents in NYC compared to respectively 118,195 and 117,022 for the same period of 2014 and 2013.

4,776 people suffered personal injury in motor vehicle accidents in NYC in July compared to 4,795 the previous month and respectively 4,591 and 5,077 for July 2014 and July 2013. Even though the number of motor vehicle accidents was very high in the month of July the number of people injured in these accidents was lower in July 2015 than in July 2013 and almost the same as in July 2014.

The number of motorists injured in a vehicle accident in July 2015 was unusually high and above 2,000 for the first time over the last 3 years under review.

A bicyclist was critically injured after being hit by a truck in Brooklyn, NYC yesterday. The accident happened at the intersection of Bath Ave and Bay 25th Street. The bicyclist who was delivering food for China Garden located half block away was trying to cross Bath Ave when he was hit by a truck traveling east on Bath Ave. The victim who is 65 years old was transported to the hospital in critical condition. 32 year old David Rodriguez died from injuries he sustained in an accident during which he was hit by a NYC MTA Bus as he was riding his bike 9 days ago. Rodriguez was biking east on Van Dike Street in Brooklyn, NYC, when he was struck by a MTA B57 Bus that was heading south on Dwight Street. The accident happened at night after 11:00 pm on July 29th.

Rodriguez was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Last Friday, 9 days later, he died from his injuries.

After the accident, the bus driver stayed at the scene and wasn’t charged.

A 57 year old man was seriously injured in a bicycle accident during which a car hit him and fled. The bicyclist had stopped in the middle of the street and was trying to cross West  145th street near Lenox Avenue when a red sedan struck him and sped away. The impact was so strong that the bicyclist was thrown in the air and landed on the windshield of the car, rolled off the hood and then hit the pavement while the bike was catapulted in the air and hit a minivan. The police are still searching for the reckless driver.

West 145th Street is a very dangerous street where many crashes have occurred in the past.  The bicycle accident happened near the intersection of Lenox Ave. According to the NYC.crashmapper heat map, 89 collisions were recorded at this location over a period of 31 months. 10 pedestrians, 2 bicyclists, 10 passengers and 11 motorists suffered personal injuries in theses crashes. A drunk driver hit a bicyclist yesterday afternoon in Queens, NYC, sending him to the hospital in critical condition. The bicycle accident happened yesterday afternoon around 3:15 pm. The bicyclist was riding down Queens Plaza North near 29th St. in Long Island City when he was hit by a 35 year old drunk driver. The driver is expected to be charged with driving under the influence. Read more in the NY Daily News
