Reckless driver who killed Queens delivery man on scooter did not suffer medical episode

While the NYPD mentioned to media that the woman who fatally struck a delivery worker in Queens, NYC and crashed her car in the dining area of a restaurant might have suffered a medical episode, her family disagrees.

Costas Yerolemou, the ex-husband of Maro Yerolemou told Street Blog NYC that his ex-wife never had a medical episode and that her physical health was perfectly fine. However he said she was emotionally shaken by the accident and could not stop crying.

The family says another car rear-ended the Mercedes

Yerolemou also told Street blog that his wife was not responsible for the accident. According to him, his wife was on her way to church to attend a celebration for the Eastern Orthodox Holly Week and was looking for a parking space when she was rear-ended by another car. Her car careened down the street and she could not stop it according to her ex-husband.

The police are still investigating the fatal car accident and the Mercedes is still visible in front of the 114th Street Precinct. The rear bumper is detached however the significant damage in the front is an indication that the car was travelling at a high rate of speed.  A witness who saw the accident happening estimated that Maro Yerolemou was travelling at a speed that was above 50 mph, twice the authorized speed of 25mph in New York City residential streets.

Maro Yerolemou’s ex-husband also told Streetblog that she was an excellent driver and that she would never speed. However a plate search in “how’s my driving” indicates that the car accumulated 19 violations including 4 for speeding in school zones in August and September 2019.

Not enough protection for vulnerable road users

The police are still investigating the true causes of the accident while Street Safety Advocates are all pointing fingers at Mayor de Blasio saying that he did not do enough to protect the most vulnerable road users from reckless drivers.
