An 86 ylocation of the deadly 9 year old pedestrian accident on Northern blvdear old driver fatally struck a young pedestrian in a crosswalk on Northern Boulevard Queens, NYC, and  left the scene of the accident. He was chased by a taxi driver who was able to stop him several blocks away.

The accident occurred last Saturday Afternoon around 1:20 pm. 9-year-old Giovanni Ampuero and his mother, Karen Manrique, had the right of way and were walking in the crosswalk  on Northern Boulevard at the 70th Street intersection in Jackson Heights when Juan Jimenez made a left turn from 70th Street onto Northern Boulevard and plowed into them. The boy was lying in the street while her mother was holding him. He suffered severe head trauma. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

After he hit the boy, Jimenez just sped off. A taxi driver who saw the accident started to chase him. He was able to stop him 10 blocks away.

Jimenez told the police that he didn’t know he hit someone. He said he just saw a woman, Giovanni’s mother, jumping in front of his car but he didn’t hit her. He told the police he got scared because he was threatened and sped off.  He stopped after the cab driver who chased him told him he had hit someone.

The 86 old driver was arraigned with charges of failure to exercise due care, failure to yield to a pedestrian and leaving the scene of an accident.

NORTHERN BOULEVARD HAS A HISTORY OF DEADLY PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS

Northern Boulevard is a very dangerous corridor and sadly Giovanni Ampuero is not the first pedestrian to die on this Boulevard while crossing the road. Our firm represents the family of 6 year old Nashat Nahian who was fatally struck by a truck 9 blocks away from Saturday’s accident on 61st Street and Northern Boulevard. Nashat was on his way to school with his 11 year old sister when an unlicensed truck driver made a left turn onto Northern Boulevard and fatally struck the young boy. Bill de Blasio chose the location of Nashat’s accident to launch the Vision Zero Initiative and Northern Boulevard was revamped by the DOT in this specific area. Pedestrian islands and turn bays were added on the Boulevard however these do not protect pedestrians from drivers turning onto the Boulevard from a crossing street as cars turning from a crosing street onto the boulevard  do have the green light at the same time as the pedestrians are crossing.
